Marginalia and LUFF-operated services are provided by LUFF LLC, a Massachusetts limited liability company. These terms describe Marginalia and its optional connections. Read them with the Privacy policy. Availability depends on the release, device and connections you choose.
The App Store license
Your App Store license is governed by Apple's standard End User License Agreement, unless a different license is provided with your download. These supplemental product and service terms do not replace that license or change Apple's usage rules. Apple's standard agreement also addresses content and services accessible through the app.
Your library and content
Marginalia lets you collect articles, podcasts, files and notes in a personal library. Local reading, listening and notes do not require a Marginalia account, subscription or server.
You retain the rights you hold in the content you add. Using Marginalia does not transfer ownership of your content to LUFF. When you choose a connected feature, you permit the processing and transmission needed to carry out that feature, within the permission you give and as described in the Privacy policy. This does not grant ownership of your material.
Only import, record, download or share material you are entitled to use. Respect publishers' rights, other people's privacy and applicable service terms. Access to a source does not automatically permit redistribution. Marginalia does not grant rights in third-party works or authorize bypassing access restrictions.
Connections you choose
Optional iCloud, nearby devices, home servers, mail imports, YouTube browsing and playback, agents and chat connections send information outside the local library. Review the recipient and permissions before approving a connection. Access can include more than a single item.
A device, server or provider you choose can receive information within its approved access and retain copies. Keep credentials and private connection addresses secure. Revoking access stops future authorized requests through that permission; it does not retrieve copies already sent elsewhere.
External providers operate under their own terms. LUFF does not operate a home server or chat provider merely because you connect it to Marginalia.
YouTube features
Marginalia uses YouTube API Services. By using Marginalia's YouTube features, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Google's Privacy Policy describes Google's processing; our Privacy policy explains Marginalia's account browsing, saved references and embedded player.
Account browsing is optional and read-only. API-derived references depend on a current, authorized provider cache and can require reconnection after expiry, revocation or restore. Personal notes and independently supplied material remain library content. Playback and availability depend on YouTube, the source video and supported embedding. A saved reference is not a downloaded copy of the video. Viewer sign-in does not grant caption-download or redistribution rights. Import only caption files you are entitled to use; supplied text and timing are not a guarantee that they match the video.
Optional relay services
Marginalia Relay forwards requests to a device that holds your library. A reachable library device is needed for live answers. The relay does not host a replica of your reading library or provide general hosted inference.
The sealed bridge encrypts request content to your library's key. OAuth chat connections use readable forwarding, and the optional Hosted Agent processes selected text through Cloudflare AI. These paths have different privacy properties; the sealed bridge's encryption does not extend to every feature.
Some sealed requests can wait in a bounded queue while a library is offline. Other requests can fail while a device is unreachable. Connectivity depends on networks, device availability, platform restrictions and service limits. There is no continuous-availability guarantee for the relay.
AI and automated results
AI answers, summaries, translations and transcriptions can be incomplete or wrong. Check them against the original source before using or sharing them. These features assist reading and note-taking; they do not provide professional advice. Decide whether a result is appropriate for your purpose.
Hosted Agent processes selected text and your request through Cloudflare AI. A connected chat service or agent has its own processing rules. Read the feature notice and Privacy policy before sharing personal or confidential information.
Safe and lawful use
Use hosted services only for requests you are authorized to make. Do not access someone else's library without permission, bypass access controls, steal credentials, overload infrastructure or violate others' rights.
LUFF may restrict a hosted connection to address abuse, security incidents, legal obligations or service failures, subject to applicable law. Losing hosted connectivity does not transfer ownership of your locally stored content.
Backups and stopping use
Keep copies of material you need. Sync is not a substitute for a backup. Deleting an item removes it from the current library view; full backups can include operation history and deleted material. Turning a connection off does not by itself erase copies held by Apple, another device, a server or a provider.
You can stop using a connection or the app. See the Privacy policy and Support for the difference between disconnecting, deleting items and requesting removal of LUFF-held information.
Pricing and future paid services
These terms and joining the launch list do not create a subscription, automatic renewal or charge. Website launch offers describe a planned optional service; joining is not a purchase. These terms do not change the offer recorded with your signup.
Before a paid service is purchased, its price, billing period, renewal and cancellation terms, purchase route and any trial conditions will be shown. No paid entitlement or future renewal rate is established by this page. Local use needs no subscription.
Changes and your rights
This page identifies its version and effective date. Material changes will be explained where notice is required. New data sharing that needs permission requires that permission; a policy update alone does not authorize it.
Nothing here removes mandatory consumer rights, remedies or protections under applicable law. These supplemental terms add no separate liability cap, arbitration requirement, class-action waiver or governing-law clause.
